Why Law Firms Get Fired
This morning’s ABA Journal e-report contained an article noting that 70% of in house counsel are NOT satisified with the firms that do work for them. The article cites a survey conducted by the Massachusetts consulting firm BTI Consulting Group.
According to the study, outside counsel are growing more and more dissatisfied with their lawyers. The reasons for their dissatisfaction aren’t new: poor communication, inability to identify and convey the value of their services, and failure to keep up with the shifting needs of their clients.
The good news is that the more clients are dissatisfied with lawyers who fail to put clients first, the better business will be for the client-focused law firms. This may be especially good news for smaller law firms that are traditionally more ‘hands on’ with clients, and can adapt more quickly than large firms with many bureaucratic layers. If you’re one of those firms, and you can clearly articulate the value that you offer, new business may be coming your way.
