Work-Life Balance, Flexible Scheduling and Remote Access
A law firm winning a work-life balance award? Yep. There’s hope in the area of work-life balance for lawyers, as this New Zealand Herald article reports. that the law firm of Meredith Connell won New Zealand’s highest award for work-life balance by allowing flexible work arrangements for lawyers to accommodate non-firm-related endeavors.
One of the ways the firm is able to offer the flexible scheduling arrangements is by providing lawyers with remote access to work from home at off hours. Although this is becoming more common, it’s not as common as one might expect. Too many firms are still expecting lawyers to be working in the office. They assume that if a lawyer isn’t in the office (or in court) they can’t be working. They’re shooting themselves in the foot by failing to give all of their attorneys -not just partners – remote access, at least on a limited basis.
So much of what we do now as lawyers is done on the computer, and working from home (or other remote locations) is much more difficult now without access to the system. Why not let your lawyers make you more money and serve your clients better by allowing them to fit more work into their schedule and still do the things they enjoy? They’ll be happier, more motivated, more loyal, and more likely to work hard for you. Meredith Connell cut turnover in half by allowing more flexible work arrangements – reason enough to consider it.
